Like most of us, I fell in love with the Lowcountry as a child when we spent family vacations on Hilton Head. We started coming here sometime in the late ‘60s, and often stayed at Turtle Lane Cabannas in Sea Pines.
Upon arrival we would pull Spanish moss off an oak to proudly sport on our car antenna. Then we’d run to the lagoon to check out the alligators.
During the day we would bake in the sun and swim until our fingers were wrinkled and our noses were burned. My favorite thing to do was to chase ghost crabs at night on the beach with my dad and brothers.
On special occasions we would put pillows in the car and drive all the way to Hudson’s for dinner. If you didn’t live or vacation here in the late ‘60s, the drive was long and very dark! Almost a bit creepy.
Funny how memories work. Each year we came back to the same condo and built even stronger memories. When I finally had to opportunity to move here permanently in 1986, the summer memories turned into everyday life. How lucky are we to live in an area so rich with beauty and so many fun summer activities.
